FC Barcelona have condemned the prison sentences awarded to leaders of separatist leaders for their functions in an banned 2017 liberty referendum.
Catalonia deputy chief was sentenced by the supreme court of spain to 13 years in prison Monday. Another eight leaders, out of 12 on trial, were found guilty of sedition and were imprisoned for between nine and 13 years.
Prison is not the solution, stated a Barcelona announcement published on Monday.
The team played a La Liga match against Las Palmas behind closed doors in the Nou Camp due to protests in the city over the freedom questionnaire, which the Spanish authorities declared illegal.
Throughout the match, the scoreboard completed a picture of a ballot box and the termdemocracy onto it.
The club said it was wrongto prevent citizens exercising their democratic right to free expression.
Gerard Pique, who plays for Spain and Barcelona, was among those who voted in the poll.
On Monday he stated has beenproud to be part of this team following the announcement which called for the battle in Catalonia to be resolvedsolely from political dialogue.
In exactly the same way that the preventative prison sentence did not help to solve the battle, neither will the prison sentence provided today, since prison is not the answer, the announcement said.
More than ever the club asks all political leaders to direct a process of dialogue and negotiation to solve this particular conflict, which should also allow for the discharge of convicted political and civil leaders.
FC Barcelona also expresses all its support and solidarity to the families of people that are deprived of the freedom.
La Liga side Espanyol, also based in Barcelona, stated theirrespect for judicial decisions but also called for public governmentto look for out democratic and political solutions to asocial crisis.
Girona, who perform Barcelona and compete in the Spanish second division, rejected the judgment out of the Spanish Supreme Court and reaffirmed their standing asa guardian of freedom of expression and in favour of their right to determine.
The club said that they werecommitted to starting a procedure for dialogue and discussion between all parties, even without limitations or conditions.
The Catalan Football Federation said that it would terminate all national activity,in solidarity with condemned Native American politicians and social celebrities and their families.
After the judgment of Monday countless students and civil servants started protesting from the capital of Barcelona.
Protesters blocked streets, although civil servants accumulated out protests and some government buildings have been reported in other towns.
